This
series of graphic work was created in Kasterlee, Belgium at the
Frans Masereel Centre and is an extension of my previous series
on communication and language. It initially came about after I
found a box of used postcards and letters in a second hand shop
in Zürich, where I was living at the time. I continued to
collect correspondence during my travels in Europe, admiring the
elegant scripts, wax encrusted envelopes and recognising many
of the places and return addresses. Keeping
in touch is faster, easier and more convenient now but there is
an intimacy that has been lost with electronic media. These works
are a reminder of the investment once made in personal relationships
in putting pen to paper, buying a stamp, trekking to the post
office.
